What we do

We provide funds to support young carers in a wide variety of ways so that they can be “a child for a day”.

Groups activities
and events for
young carers

We know that for many young carers spending time with
other young carers is so important. Group activities can offer opportunities for fun, taking part in exciting, creative and
sporting activities and making friends.

Young carers’ groups also provide emotional support in a safe
space with other young carers and adults, who are skilled at understanding the experiences of young carers.

Examples of how we support group activities:

Tickets for the Young Carers Festival
each year in July. Camping over the weekend
with young carers from across Southern England, young carers enjoy a great range of new and
fun activities from kayaking to face painting
and silent discos to abseiling.

Young Carer Groups run monthly. BCP Council Children’s Services Team run three groups for children and teenagers of different ages. These regular groups enable young people to make friends, have fun, learn new skills and provide emotional support. The charity funds nutritious food for each group session (with the teenage group choosing and cooking their food together) and a Christmas celebration event which each group chooses themselves. This annual event is to say thank you for everything Poole’s fantastic young carers do throughout the year.

MYTIME Making Memories programme
run in school holidays. Poole Young Carers
Charity pays for 20 young carers in Poole to take part in MYTIME’s Making Memories programme. These sessions take place in the school holidays
at MYTIME’s base at Worth Matravers.
Transport costs so that young carers can enjoy days out and group activities. Without support for transport costs, many young carers could not participate in group activities and days out. We support BCP Council and the MYTIME charity with transport costs for the Making Memories programme and pay the transport costs for special days out organised by the Council.

“’I love Scouts. It makes me really happy – I feel more confident and I’m learning new skills all the time and making friends. It’s the highlight of my week! Thank you for making it all possible for me.”

Funding for
individual young carers
and
their families

We recognise that all young carers and their families are unique and we make sure that the Charity’s funds can be used to make a positive difference to individual young carers and their families.

Examples of how we support individual young carers and families:

A Well-Being Fund has been set by the Charity. This can be
drawn on by BCP Council staff to meet the specific needs of individual young carers. Examples of how the fund has been used include paying for specialist counselling and therapy sessions;
gym and sporting activities; fees for clubs and groups and music lessons. Young Carers tell BCP Staff and the charity that this funding makes a very big difference in their lives such as building their confidence; providing respite from caring; helping them cope with their emotions; making new friends and learning new skills.

We provide gift vouchers to young carers and their families
who have the highest level of need at Easter and Christmas.
This gives them the opportunity to buy shop for themselves at
a supermarket where there is plenty of choice. Our supermarket partner has also generously donated a gift for each young carer
to go with the voucher.

Help us give young
carers the opportunity
to be
a child for a day.
